My music is composed of intimate portraits of my life, lived and imagined.  I am inspired by the world and people around me though my favourite composers - Bach, Shostakovich, Glass - have made an undeniable imprint on my musical aesthetics.

I love combining classical music elements with Eastern European and Gypsy inflections, traditional sounds with unconventional harmonies.  My favourite structural form of expression is chamber music - because it allows for grand and humble gestures, both seated in the beauty of a unique musical language.

I have been commisssioned to write music for chamber ensembles, theatre, performance installations and special events in the Americas and Europe.

Bushes and Bombshelters, my debut album, has been released worldwide on January 25th 2019, on the label Long Play. Encompassing a 5- year composition period, the pieces on this album voice my connection to two countries I love: Serbia, my homeland, and Canada, my new home. These compositions are intimate, deeply human stories about land and journeys, friendship and love, crossroads and memory. The compositional fusion of classical, gypsy and folk music on this album is both haunting and cinematic in nature.

Bushes and Bombshelters was recorded between February and June 2018 at CBC Studio 211 and World Records Studio in Toronto and generously supported by the Toronto Arts Council.

You can listen or purchase the album on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Google Play, Deezer and Tidal.

“An album with a visceral eloquence”

-Lenny Stout (Cashbox Magazine Canada)

“Bushes and Bomshelters paints a poignant musical portrait ... brilliantly depicted by Ivana Popovic.”

-Sharna Searle (The WholeNote Magazine)

“A dark and beautiful recording ... extraordinarily expressed with deep finery on a gloriously coloured and textured musical canvas that is a moving and breathtaking experience.  At every turn Miss Popovic captures something viscerally spectacular, often bleak and yet, somehow, beautifully permanent as well.  Folk and classical traditions have seldom come together as gloriously as on Bushes and Bomshelters.”
